What I love about living in Pinehurst are the choices we have in maintaining an active lifestyle. For example I’m a golfer and bridge player but many of my friends and clients sail on Lake Pinehurst, or head to their respective clubs to play tennis, lawn bowling, bocce, croquet and pickleball to name just a few. What’s nice is you can choose to be as involved and competitive as you’d like to be or just play for the fun of it.

Another popular sporting group in the Sandhills are the equestrians. From dressage to carriage driving, eventing, fox hunting, or trail riding through the 4000 acre Walthour-Moss Foundation, the choices for horse lovers here are many. While not a horsewoman myself, I have many friends, clients, and colleagues who partake in the sport and our community residents are blessed with being able to attend schooling shows, clinics, and a wide variety of competitions ranging in all levels from regional to international.

We also have in our presence a number of professional and Olympic equestrians in our midst who maintain training facilities and horse farms in Southern Pines and the surrounding area. What draws them here are the lush pastures, sandy footing, and temperate climate. But what makes this area extra special to the horse community are the Walthour-Moss Foundation and the Carolina Horse Park.

The Walthour-Moss Foundation can be found in the heart of Southern Pines horse country and is comprised of over 4,000 acres of sandy riding and driving trails set aside exclusively for equestrian use. The Carolina Horse Park (CHP), located in Raeford, NC, is a premier 250-acre competition venue. It is the site of the famed Stoneybrook Steeple Chase held yearly in the spring and hosts numerous horse sporting events throughout the year. Recently a friend visited CHP during the Carolina International and snapped a few shots.
