Sacred Heart Church – Uganda Project
For the past 13 years, Sacred Heart Church has supported missionary work in Luweero District, Uganda, by providing clean water wells and scholarships for needy students of the diocese. Many citizens, especially children, die from the drinking of water retrieved from local ponds that are shared with the animals. As well, children searching for water sometimes do not return as a result of the treacherous nature of the area.
The scholarship program was initiated to assist qualified students to receive an education who would otherwise be destined to a life of working in the fields. There is no public school and parents who cannot afford to pay the school fees cannot educate their children at any level, even primary school.
To date, Sacred Heart Church has funded 43 Wells and yearly sponsors over 70 students in the Luweero region of Uganda. There is no other church or organization in the United States providing any assistance to this particular Region.
Father Joseph Kakooza Nnyanzi, Pastor of Cathedral Parish and Coordinator of lands and investments for the Kasana Luweero Diocese, administers the Program for Sacred Heart Church. Farther Joseph’s brother, Father Emmanuel, is a professor at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. Father Joseph visits Sacred Heart annually in the fall to report on the mission work provided by Sacred Heart Church.
